I am intrigued by the spiritual energy of children! Their fresh, new perspective is wonderful to be around and I am in awe of the possibilities that await them in this life.
As a preschool teacher, I was honored to be of assistance to them as they learned to navigate in this physical realm. I try to capture these feelings in some small way in my paintings of children at work and play.
My study of Botanical Illustration at Longwood Gardens prepared me for my paintings of children. Observational skills and attention to detail are required for both. I was a member of the Philadelphia Society of Botanical Illustrators and exhibited at Longwood Gardens, The Philadelphia Flower Show, and several galleries.
Later on, my hand was guided by Karl Kuerner who ‘pushed me into the water’ when my perfection paralysis took hold. He probably came up with the slogan for Nike, “Just do it.”
I also enjoy painting portraits, although it can be a bit more challenging. No matter how much I think it resembles the subject, I don’t consider it a success until the family is happy with it.
Lately, I’ve been enjoying the painting of still life with Rick Phillips. With still life, the only one I need to please is me.
